Welcome to my gallery of my designs for my schools newspaper The East Scroll

All About me: Ali Solis

I am full of ideas and i’m the most creative person i know. I love any type of art form because i’m able to express myself and create anything my mind comes up with. One of those art forms that i’m still fairly new at is designing with Indesign, and using those designs in our schools newspaper. I’ve been apart of our schools newspaper for around a year and a half and this year i have been given the role of design editor. Being apart of newspaper means a lot to me because i get to write about stories i’m passionate about and create a designs and let out my inner artist.

Photo caption: My favorite hobby is photography, i like to go out with my other photographer friends and have mini photo shoots with them. I would take pictures of them and they’d take pictures of me, this is one of my favorite photos of me from one of those photo shoots. I love photography as i feel like everyone deserves to feel beautiful.

See the person, not the illness

Scroll issue 3, volume 88

Inspiration: I wanted to represent mental illness by using black and white to show that living with a mental illness feels bleak and colorless and then adding colors as a way to show someone recovering from a mental illness as they are exposed to the colorful world around them.

What i used: I used a picture that i took of one of my friends and i distorted it using Photoshop and i also turned it black and white, then i went on google and found a colorful paint splatter that i liked so i went to Photoshop to remove the back ground and create a PNG and i put it behind the photo of the girl.

East Scroll Cover

Scroll issue 1, volume 89

Inspiration: I wanted to show school spirit for our first issue of the year and decided to involve our schools homecoming queen.

What i used: I used the rectangle tool and made them black and red and rearranged it to look like the cheerleader outfit, i also took a picture of the homecoming queen and put her on top of the design, then i added a few white strokes.

Making my way downtown

Scroll issue 4, volume 88

Inspiration: I wanted to use the color scheme of the photo on top on the whole design.

What i used: I used one of the photos my friend took of downtown and then i used the eyedropper tool on it to get the colors used in the back ground and the yellow, i also added a rectangle stroke on top of the photos.

Capture the moment

Scroll issue 2, volume 89

Inspiration: I wanted to make sure that is showed the photography of the people i interviewed so i decided to use the Polaroid camera for that.

What i used: I the rectangle tool and made them the color of the rainbow part of the Polaroid camera, and then i used a photo of a Polaroid picture and got rid of the original picture and added on top the photos that the people i interviewed took along with the pull quote in the middle.

The vicious cycle of eating disorders part 1

Scroll issue 1, volume 89

Inspiration: I decided to use bright colors and things that have to do with eating in order to bring awareness to such a dark topic.

What i used: I took a photo of one of my friend holding a paper with a sad face on it, then i went on google to find a picture of measuring tape, a fork and spoon and a scale, then i went to Photoshop to get rid of the background and make it a PNG i used the spoon and fork and the scale to make it look like it’s a plate with silverware next to it then i added the measuring tape. I also added a few yellow strokes.

The vicious cycle of eating disorders part 2

Scroll issue 1, volume 89

Inspiration: I wanted to make sure i added a both genders to my design as eating disorders are something that don’t only affect women but men as well.

What i used: I took the measuring tape PNG and added it on the page and added a photo i took of one of my friends looking distressed about eating and made it a PNG on Photoshop along with adding the PNG of fork and spoon from the first page behind him.

The bittersweet taste of anti-depressants and other meds part 1

Scroll issue 4, volume 88

Inspiration: I wanted to use the colors to make the design feel euphoric as it’s about getting help and achieving personal happiness.

What i used: Since this story was personal to me i drew the majority of the images like the pill bottle and pills on a drawing app and made it a PNG on Photoshop. I also added different types of strokes throughout the page and took pastel color that i made using the rectangle tool and filling them in with colors that are soft and comforting.

The bittersweet taste of anti-depressants and other meds part 2

Scroll issue 4, volume 88

Inspiration: Along with that since this story was personal to me so i drew the majority of the images (Even if they aren’t that good haha).

What i used: I used the drawing app and created the picture of the person with a pill in there mouth, which was Prozac the most common antidepressant that’s prescribed. I also added a pill bottle i drew and more strokes.
